Khewra Salt Mine

Located in the foothills of the Salt Range in the state of Punjab (about 160km from Islamabad and 260km from Lahore), Khewra Salt Mine is the second largest salt mine in the world and the oldest in the sub-continent.

How the salt mine was discovered is interesting – by Alexander the Great’s horses!

It is said that when Alexander the Great visited the sub-continent and when the army stopped at the area for rest, the horses started licking the stones and when one of the soldiers tasted the rock stone, it was salty thus leading to the discovery of the mine.

While the salt lake in Bolivia is most fascinating, this salt mine is impressive.
