Homestay in Ghulkin Village

When we were in Gulmit, we stayed at the local guide, Karim’s and his relatives’ houses in Ghulkin Village (3,000m). It was part of the itinerary and we were told that we were the first foreigners to do so!

The houses are simple and basic, devoid of elaborate furniture and decorations, yet they proudly and warmly welcomed us with wide open arms. I could feel the cosiness as soon as I entered the house and I saw no hostility, only hospitality. And I was impressed by their warm and friendly gesture.

The ladies of the house took long hours to come up with elaborate and delicious dishes for dinner. They would wait for the guests and the men of the house to finish their dinner before they had theirs. It is their culture /custom.
